NB. Aperture is measured in F Stops. These represent the ratio of the lens's focal length to the diameter of the aperture opening. F/2 is larger than F/4 therefore F/2 would let more light into the sensor than F/4
You can adjust the aperture by rotating the wheel on your camera. Usually this is set to one third of a stop per click. In this way you can know what the aperture is without even looking.
Each stop on the scale will either double or halve the amount of light reaching the sensor. An example of the full stop scale is:
