This picture was taken during a weekend break to Rome last December when, amazingly, we caught a few days of weather better than anything here during the whole of last summer. As a result, people were still eating and drinking outdoors late at night and I was taking pictures without getting frozen.
The gelateria (ice cream shop) was open at 11.30pm and I put the camera on a tripod and took photos as people came and went.
I think the lights were there to mark the beginning of the Christmas season, but it’s a far less commercialised affair than here in England.
Our competition judge thought that the photo would have been improved if the customer was wearing a lighter coloured jacket. In future I shall carry a selection around with me just in case I need them!
